This 20 Time Project was very close to my heart because my purpose was to find a way to make learning fun for high school students. Elementary children think learning with picture books is fun, but tactics like these do not work in high school; you need to understand the age group you are working with and cater to their desires. This is how we came up with the idea of a meme study. High school kids love memes and love to laugh, so we made them both laughable and educational.
Initially, we thought of doing a nutrition project or project on cats, but then realized those topics had no purpose; they were just two topics we both liked. We came up with a good purpose and then found a study to fit the purpose and be something interesting to us. I know most projects have setbacks, and you would expect that with a project like this one, but we did very well. Ranna and I are both organized and stay on task, which helped eliminate any errors. We scheduled certain months for each stage of our project, and stuck to our timeline. We finished with just the right amount of time to make a nicely completed and informative project. The only setback we had was finding a color printer to print our memes out for our poster board. We went to journalism and printed a small amount of pictures, and then Ranna realized she had a color printer, so that setback was overcome pretty quickly and easily.
I learned a lot from this project and how I work when given so much freedom in school, something I'm not used to. I know I got better at staying on task and on schedule, just because we had to if we wanted to make a thorough project. I learned to communicate with Ranna on everything and not wait until the last minute to make a decision. If I could do this project again, I would start our project earlier than we did. Because we switched topics a few times, that delayed us by just a little. Otherwise, I felt extremely happy with how this project went. I grew in the sense that I learned better communication and time management skills.
I feel this project has potential to become a big deal. Teachers are constantly trying to find ways to engage and interest their students, and everyone who participated in our project was both of these things. I think the next step would be to test this project out in all subjects of school and interview students about their thoughts on the teaching style we produced. I would continue this project with Ranna because we work well together, and although we are friends, we clearly know when to stop goofing around and get work done. We are very studious, which is an important quality to have when tackling such a difficult task. I really enjoyed this project and feel it was a good use of my semester.
